FAQs

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy used to readjust the subconscious or auto pilot part of your mind. When in hypnosis, distracting thoughts and sensations are decreased making your mind more receptive to positive suggestions for self improvement.

The aim is to rebalance the subconscious and conscious mind allowing them to work together in harmony, which in turn helps give you greater control over your mental and physical wellbeing.

Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep. It involves inducing a state of deep relaxation and focus. In hypnosis you are awake, aware and in control. It is in this state that the conscious mind can relax, be calm, and more welcome to new ideas, concepts, and perspectives.

It is a calm, relaxed, and gentle way to do therapy while additionally utilising the subconscious. This is where many unhelpful outdated patterns driving our thoughts and responses to life situations can be readjusted easily.

Just say you’re on a plane because you want to go to Paris but the plane keeps going to London. It happens again & again. You keep telling the flight attendants to alter the flight path but you’re still not getting to Paris.

Hypnotherapy opens the door to the cockpit so you can speak to the pilot directly. It’s just a conversation with a suggestion to alter the flight path. The pilot isn’t going to be convinced by any random request but with solid factual evidence he/she may turn the auto pilot off and get you to Paris by the most efficient route.

A better question might be “What doesn’t it work for?”

Hypnosis is a genuine psychological therapy practice and medical research continues to demonstrate its efficacy.

WizeMind hypnotherapy is nothing like the performances you see in stage shows, where you sometimes see people barking like a dog or clucking like a chicken. There are no gimmicks and there is no mind control.

In a hypnotherapy session you are in complete control the whole time. You will hear the suggestions made to you, and you can choose to take them on board or not.

• You cannot get stuck in hypnosis – this is impossible – you can come back leaving the hypnotic state anytime you choose.

• You do not in any way become unconscious or semi-conscious – you remain awake.

• You cannot, at any time, be made to do things you do not want to do or think things you don’t want to think.

• You are not in anyone else’s power, and nobody can take control of any part you.

• You cannot lose your mind.

• Hypnosis cannot permanently remove memories or thoughts from your mind.

• You will not suddenly blurt out your secrets or share anything you don’t want to share

• Hypnosis cannot grant psychic abilities or supernatural powers.

• Hypnosis cannot make you act against your will or moral code

• You do not say or do ‘strange’ things’ unless you want to.

Hypnosis is a genuinely natural state of mind and body and is therefore extremely safe.

The experience of a hypnotic trance is very natural and common. It feels like countless other moments in your life where you may have been absorbed in a good book or movie, lost in thought, engrossed in music, driving to your destination and not really remembering quite how you got there, or even meditating.

Once you enter a state of hypnosis, your body will feel calm and relaxed, like the way you might feel when meditating. It is a very subjective individual experience and different people report different pleasant sensations.

The more you practice, the more deeply absorbed and comfortable you naturally become.

It’s important to realise that you are not reliving that scene but simply reviewing it, and are completely safe.

You will be gently reminded of your safety and guided towards comfort.

You will be given opportunity to express and process your feelings. You do not have to share anything you’d rather not.

You can be hypnotised. Everyone can. If you are willing to enter hypnosis you are a good candidate. If someone is trying to hypnotise you against your will it simply won’t work. For that reason, if you are extremely sceptical of its effectiveness or very frightened of it, it may not work for you.

In fact, you don’t need to go deeply if you choose not to, even a light trance is successful. There is no wrong or right way, just any way that feels comfortable for you.

Sometimes you will notice dramatic shifts right away. Other times you will notice smaller incremental changes over time. And sometimes the changes are most apparent when you look back and actually realise how much things have changed for the better. Everyone is individual.

The number of sessions depends on the complexity of your situation. If after the initial session you would like to continue, then generally 3-5 session packs are recommended to really wire in the benefits.

Initial sessions are usually up to 90 minutes duration
Subsequent follow up sessions are usually up to 60 minutes duration.
You may like to give yourself some extra time to avoid rushing.

We will discuss your presenting concerns, your goals, and your expectations. I will ask some questions to gain an understanding of your needs considering any medication or other therapies you may have had or are currently having with other healthcare professionals. I will explain in detail how clinical hypnosis works, what you can expect, and you will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the therapeutic process. You will then be guided to a wonderful state of deep relaxation and enjoy your hypnotherapy session.

You will be given a recording of the hypnotherapy part of the consultation and will need to listen to it daily.

That is absolutely fine. Your therapist is trained and qualified in coaching, counselling and psychotherapy.
